Choosing our Kings camp fridge for the subtrunk

We bought a Kings camp fridge for about $208 from 4WDSupacentre.com.au. They seem to have a different sale on every 24 hours. The staff kindly brought a display model to the car so I could check the size. It just fits in the subtrunk.

We opted for the 30L model. We already had the 50L version on previous trips, but it’s a bit too big to manage in the car.

After trying the sub trunk and back seat, we eventually settled on the boot, since it’s easier to access, keeps the noise away from the passengers, and allows more packing space in boot, without worrying accessing the fridge in the sub trunk.

We’ll probably move it to the subtrunk when we sleep in the car. The boot cover leaves ample opening in either side for ventilation, as long as we don’t block the side wells. And the 12V power supply is conveniently located in the boot.

  2. Watch out for the lid closing on your arm - that catch has really sharp edges and will tear your skin. I used sandpaper to smooth the edges after being bitten once too many times.
    Fridge works well.

    1. Naomi Riley Good call. Fortunately, mine is not overheating. It has good ventilation and gaps in the sub trunk. I don’t have the sub trunk lid on it when the fridge is running.

      1. Tesla Tripping I think I need to upgrade to a better fridge. Mine was a cheapie, the Ridge Ryer. It was less than $90. I had it in the sub trunk and was sleeping above. User error. 😂

Tesla Tripping does the sub trunk open to the gaps on both sides to allow air flow? Also, does using the slide for the mattress create a lift with an air gap? Thanks

      3. Yes, the sub trunk opens to the side wells of the boot on both sides, so air can move around the fridge as long as we don't pack those wells full.

With the Teraglide platform in place, there's still plenty of air gap around the fridge. I slept on top of it for several nights in the Snowy Mountains, with Camp Mode keeping the cabin cool, and the fridge ran fine the whole time.

    1. Paula Fernandes We bought ours bundled with both power cables, 12V and 240V. I can’t recall if that price included both. They have a sale every other day.

Now looking at an induction as a potential cooking option in the future. I have fuel atm. Powerful, polluting and smelly.
